Slab Positioning Yard
LaseSPY is a laser-based measurement system for detecting the position and dimensions of slabs in warehouses and outdoor storage areas. The system measures slab positions in crane, trolley and height directions and provides reliable 3D position data for automated slab yard processes. Depending on the total width of the warehouse or crane span, LaseSPY uses one or more 2D laser scanners. The measurement results can be used in automated slab yard systems to support safe, efficient and collision-free crane operation.
The Application
LaseSPY is designed for automated slab handling in steel industry warehouses and outdoor storage facilities. The laser scanners are installed on the crane trolley or crane bridge girder and scan the slabs while the crane is moving through the storage area.
The crane moves to a defined start position and initializes the LASE measurement system. During crane traverse motion, the system records both the scan data from the laser scanners and the current crane position. The collected measurement information is then evaluated in the LASE application software.
After each pass across the entire yard, and already while the crane approaches designated storage locations, the processed measurement data is transmitted to the crane PLC or inventory management system. This includes the positions of all slabs in X, Y and Z directions as well as their dimensions.
Based on this information, the ERP system can generate individual travel commands and continuously verify the warehouse image. This supports automated crane handling and helps prevent product collisions during slab storage and retrieval.
